Catch and Release Plot
Catch and Release is a romantic comedy film released on January 26,
2007. It is the directorial debut of Susannah Grant, who wrote the movie
Erin Brockovich. It stars Jennifer Garner as a woman mourning her
fiance's death who finds a more than welcoming shoulder to cry on in her
best friend. Timothy Olyphant and filmmaker Kevin Smith co-star.
Gray (Garner) is mourning the death of her fiance who died in a tragic
accident during his bachelor party.
Catch and Release was filmed in summer 2005, with a reprise in December
2005. In July 2005, several scenes were filmed in Boulder, Colorado,
where the story takes place.
Critical reaction towards the movie has been quite mixed. As of January
27, 2006 10:00 AM PST the Rotten Tomatoes ratings were at 22% and 26%
for Cream of the Crop respectively. On Metacritic the film had a
slightly better 44 by January 29th.
However, the film has also recieved "Two Thumbs Up" from major movie
critics, Ebert and Roper.
Reliable box office prediction and analysis site Boxofficemojo.com
pegged Catch and Release for a $4.6 million opening weekend at its 1,622
sites, with Leesmovieinfo.com estimating $5.0 million. The film edged
above these expectations and grossed an estimated $8.0 million in its
first three days — with Sony indicating that 75% of the audience was
female (with 58% being over 25). The pattern of films that rely heavily
on its leading lady having a dominantly female audience can also be seen
in pictures like In Her Shoes and Just Like Heaven, other medium sized
box office successes.
