Hell is of
this world and there are men who are unhappy escapees from
hell, escapees destined ETERNALLY to reenact their escape.
-- Antonin Artaud
1896-1948, French Theater
Producer, Actor, Theorist
The shortest
way out of Manchester is notoriously a bottle of Gordon's
gin; out of any businessman's life there is the mirage of
Paris; out of Paris, or mediocrity of talent and
imagination, there are all the drugs, from subtle,
all-conquering opium to cheating, cozening cocaine.
-- William Bolitho
1890-1930, British Author
Leave
everything. Leave Dada. Leave your wife. Leave your
mistress. Leave your hopes and fears. Leave your children in
the woods. Leave the substance for the shadow. Leave your
easy life, leave what you are given for the future. Set off
on the roads.
-- Andre Breton
1989-1966, French Surrealist
Man seeks to
escape himself in myth, and does so by any means at his
disposal. Drugs, alcohol, or lies. Unable to withdraw into
himself, he disguises himself. Lies and inaccuracy give him
a few moments of comfort.
-- Jean Cocteau
1889-1963, French Author,
Filmmaker

Man staggers
through life yapped at by his reason, pulled and shoved by
his appetites, whispered to by fears, beckoned by hopes.
Small wonder that what he craves most is self-forgetting.
-- Eric Hoffer
1902-1983, American Author,
Philosopher
What fugitive
from his country can also escape from himself.
-- Horace
BC 65-8, Italian Poet
There is a
cheap literature that speaks to us of the need of escape. It
is true that when we travel we are in search of distance.
But distance is not to be found. It melts away. And escape
has never led anywhere. The moment a man finds that he must
play the races, go the Arctic, or make war in order to feel
himself alive, that man has begin to spin the strands that
bind him to other men and to the world. But what wretched
strands! A civilization that is really strong fills man to
the brim, though he never stir. What are we worth when
motionless, is the question.
-- Antoine De Saint-Exupery
1900-1944, French Aviator,
Writer
