Tonning

Toning Of Your Skin:
Skin-care products like skin fresheners, toners and astringents form this category. They basically contain alcohol and water with glycerin, witch hazel, menthol, camphor, boric acid, rose water and alum added. They are formulated with different alcohol levels. Since alcohol has a drying effect, products for oily skin have high alcohol content while products for dry skin have little or none.

These products can be used after cleaning the skin or as interim cleansers because they can remove grime and oils. They refresh and tone up the skin, restore its acid/ alkali balance and prepare it for application of make-up.

There are claims that fresheners, toners and astringents close pores. It's not true. Any cosmetic product can alter the actual size of the pores but not close it. After using these products there is slight irritation on the skin. As a result the skin swells up and so the pores appear less prominent.

Home Made Skin Toners:
Here are some refreshing, home-made toners, when you are all warm and sweaty. Tomato juice is a good skin toner for all skin types. These toners are better than the ones available in the market because they are chemical free.

For Normal Skin:
Rose Water Toner: Mix half a tbsp of alum, 50gm of rose water and 100gm of glycerin. Wipe your face with it. Store in the fridge.
Cucumber toner: Chop and liquidize a small sized fresh cucumber with half a cup of yoghurt. Apply on face and leave for 5-10 minutes. Wash with cold water. Store in the fridge.

For dry skin:
Mint toner: Boil 2 handfuls of mint leaves in 100gm of water. The extract can be used as an anti-perspirant when diluted in water. Take 2 drops of it in a cup of water. Add half a tsp of alum and apply on the face with cotton wool.

For Oily Skin:
Alcohol And Alum Toner:Mix one tsp of alcohol(available at the chemist's), 100gm of distilled water and half a tsp of alum. Apply on the face with cotton wool and store in the fridge.
Honey and egg Toner:
Whisk one egg white and 1 tsp honey until it thickens. Add 1 tsp of lemon juice and apply on face and neck. Avoid the delicate eye and lip areas. Leave it on for 10 minutes and wash with warm water.
